Don is based out of the paper's San Francisco office and is responsible for shaping the Journal's West Coast technology coverage, with a particular focus on events in Silicon Valley. He has covered technology for nearly 27 years, starting with the St. Paul Pioneer Press and then the San Francisco Chronicle before joining the Journal in 1993. Don is heavily involved in the daily spot news filed from San Francisco, and
coordinates with other WSJ bureaus on breaking stories and features about individual companies and technology trends. Besides editing and assigning stories to others, Don continues to write news stories and features, with strongest emphasis recently on the semiconductor and computing hardware markets. He received a bachelor's degree in English from UCLA and a master's in journalism from the University of Minnesota.

Julius P. Knapp
Chief, Office of Engineering & Technology

Julius Knapp is Chief of the FCC’s Office of Engineering and Technology (OET). OET is the Commission’s primary resource for engineering expertise and provides technical support to the Chairman, Commissioners and FCC Bureaus and Offices.

Mr. Knapp has been with the FCC for 33 years. Mr. Knapp previously served as the Deputy Chief of OET since 2002. Prior to that he was the Chief of the Policy & Rules Division where he was responsible for FCC frequency allocation proceedings and for proceedings amending the FCC rules for radio frequency devices. Mr. Knapp was Chief of the FCC Laboratory from 1994 – 1997 where he was responsible for the FCC’s equipment authorization program and technical analyses.

Mr. Knapp received a Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the City College of New York in 1974. He is a member of the IEEE EMC Society and is a Fellow of the Radio Club of America. He was the 2001 recipient of the Eugene C. Bowler award for exceptional professionalism and dedication to public service and received the FCC’s Silver and Gold medal awards for distinguished service at the Commission.

Mr. Knapp lives with his wife and family in Ellicott City, Maryland.

Anand Chandrasekher

Anand Chandrasekher is Intel Senior Vice president and General Manager of our Ultra Mobility Group. This group is responsible for Intel's low power products - delivering leading edge technology for mobile internet devices. Chandrasekher's responsibilities include strategic direction, platform planning, design, development, marketing and business management.

Prior to his current assignment, Chandrasekher was Senior Vice President and General Manager of Intel's Sales and Marketing Group; in this capacity, he had responsibility for worldwide sales and marketing operations and served Intel's global customer and market needs.

Previously, Chandrasekher was Vice President and General Manager of the Mobile Platforms Group. Chandrasekher led the team responsible for the architecture, design, development and marketing of Intel's platform solutions for the mobile computing segment. He led the team that delivered - Intel(r) Centrino(tm) mobile technology-to the market; and, under his leadership the mobile group became the fastest growing business unit at Intel. He was promoted to Intel Corporate Vice President in 2003.

Prior to his Mobile Platforms Group role, Chandrasekher was Vice President of the Intel Architecture Group and General Manager of the Intel Architecture Marketing Group, where he led strategic planning and marketing activities for Intel's enterprise, mobile and desktop platform products - in this capacity, he was responsible for the launch and ramp of the Intel(r) Pentium(r) 4 processor family of products. In 1997, Chandrasekher formed and led Intel's Workstation Platform Group and was its General Manager through 1999 - under his leadership, Intel's workstation business grew into a multi-billion dollar business. From 1995 to 1997 he served as Technical Assistant to Craig Barrett, current Intel Chairman.

Chandrasekher earned his bachelor's degree in computer science and a master's degree in engineering from Cornell University. He received an MBA from Cornell's Johnson Graduate School of Management. Chandrasekher remains an active supporter of Cornell's programs and of the American India Foundation; he is an elected member of Cornell's Council of Trustees. He has been with Intel since 1988.

Peter Taglia

Mr. Taglia is Senior Director responsible for Oracle Corporation’s Product Strategy for CRM Mobile Applications. In this role, he liaison’s with many of Oracle’s product development departments to coordinate the formulation of a comprehensive next generation product strategy for enterprise mobility. Previously, he served as Oracle’s Senior Director of Product Management for Communications Industry Applications.

Prior to Oracle, Mr. Taglia held executive business and product development positions with Sybase, Telcordia Technologies, Ameritech (now at&t) and IBM. Mr. Taglia also represented Telcordia as a strategic investor on the board of Astracon, Inc and has written for Information Week.

Mr. Taglia lives in Foster City, CA and holds a B.S. (Physics) from the Polytechnic University of New York and a M.S. (Operations Research) from New York University.

Bill Krenik
CTO of Wireless Business

As chief technical officer, Dr. Bill Krenik is head of TI’s advanced wireless research team. In this position, he oversees the study and review of emerging wireless technologies and system architectures, as well as the impact they will have on the future of wireless communications. He also defines and launches new research initiatives, and supports advanced wireless product developments.

Throughout his career, Krenik has played an instrumental role in the design of TI’s silicon and software architectures, keeping in mind the critical technology requirements of mobile handset manufacturers and mobile operators. He is highly respected for his strategic contributions to the development of the industry’s first single-chip mobile phone solution, now shipping to roughly 15 mobile handset customers in more than 50 handset models. Known as TI’s LoCosto™ family of single-chip solutions, the popular platform employs the company’s one-of-a-kind DRP™ technology that applies digital techniques to formerly analog functions to achieve substantial size, power and cost reductions.

Beyond his significant contributions to TI’s single-chip product roadmap, Krenik also plays an instrumental role in shaping TI’s strategy for addressing future mobile phone technologies. He has an in-depth knowledge of future standards, particularly OFDM-based technologies, which allows him to ensure that TI’s scalable solutions are optimized to address multiple networks in the ever-changing wireless market.

Krenik serves on several academic and professional boards and was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in 2005. He is a registered professional engineer in the state of Texas and holds more than 35 U.S. patents. He speaks frequently at professional industry and technical events and has published numerous articles and technical papers. A well-respected industry expert, he also is frequently quoted in top U.S. trade and business publications, including USA Today, EE Times and IEEE Spectrum.

Krenik has been employed by TI since 1984. He received a doctorate in electrical engineering from the University of Texas, Dallas, in 1993. He also holds a master’s degree in electrical engineering from Southern Methodist University and a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Minnesota.

Thomas Lee

In addition to his role as a managing director at JP Morgan, Mr. Lee is the firm's Macro Small and Mid-Cap (SMID) equity strategist, focusing on stocks with a market capitalization below $4 billion. His approach in SMID-Cap is theme-based focusing on fundamentally solid companies that are generally overlooked by the street. Prior to joining JP Morgan, Mr. Lee was a managing director at Salomon Smith Barney. previously, Mr. Lee was a vice president at Oppenheimer, where he covered wireless services. Prior to Oppenheimer, he was a research associate at Kidder, Peabody covering telecommunications services, and earlier, a public accountant at Price waterhouse. Mr. Lee is a Chartered Financial Analyst and a member of the New York Society of Security Analysts.

Mr. Lee earned a BSE in economics from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania with dual concentrations in finance and accounting.

Angel Ruiz

Angel Ruiz is the President and CEO of Ericsson’s North American operations, a position he has held since 2001. The Plano, Texas-based market unit serves Ericsson customers in the United States and Canada.

Mr. Ruiz joined Ericsson in 1990 and has held a variety or sales and managerial positions within the company, including heading up the global account teams for Cingular/SBC/BellSouth (now AT&T). He was also involved in project and product management and worked in customer support assignments in Mexico, Venezuela and Sweden.

Before joining Ericsson, Mr. Ruiz held various positions with Sprint, AT&T and Bell Atlantic.

Mr. Ruiz holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Central Florida and a master’s degree in management science and information systems from Johns Hopkins University. Mr. Ruiz and his wife have one daughter and one son.

Bill Sanders

As Vice President of Mobile Networks Programming and Digital Product Development for Sony Pictures Television International, a division of Sony Pictures Entertainment, Bill Sanders oversees the creation of film and video related programming and applications for the global mobile marketplace outside the United States.

Most recently, Sanders served as President of Pervasive Media where he consulted businesses which focused on entertainment content for mobile devices; in particular, video for cell phones.

Prior to that position, Sanders was Senior Vice President for Big Ticket Television, a Paramount/Viacom company, where he oversaw all current network and syndicated programming and spearheaded Big Ticket’s entry into enhanced television.

Throughout his career, Sanders has served as Vice President of Original Programming for HBO and Supervising Producer for the channel’s award winning comedy series “Dream On”. In addition, he has held positions at Universal Television, Warner Brothers Television, and ABC.

Sanders has a bachelor of arts degree in communication from Stanford University.

Ozzie Diaz

Ozzie Diaz is a member of the PSG/OS&T CTO Office as the Chief Technologist for Mobility & Wireless. He provides expertise and support across HP in areas of wireless, networking and mobility. He also chairs the pan-HP mobility team that oversees and drives the “Always Connected User Experience” mobility and wireless strategy across HP.

Ozzie has over a 20-year career experience from companies across top Fortune 100 companies as well as early stage venture-backed companies. Prior to joining HP, Ozzie led Systems Engineering, Market and Business Development activities for a number of venture-funded companies including Firetide, AirFlow Networks and Bivio Networks where he was a co-founder or member of the senior management team addressing Enterprise, Service Provider and various vertical markets with wireless and security solutions.

Ozzie worked for Cisco’s Service Provider Line of Business as a Senior Manager designing and implementing telecom IP architectures and migration strategies for Telco’s, Cableco’s, Cellco’s, ISPs, and CLECs. He also worked for Motorola as their Lead System Architect at Motorola’s Land Mobile Products Sector where he led new protocol and product specifications for LMR, iDEN, and cellular radio network infrastructure.

Prior to joining Fortune 100 corporations, Ozzie spent time in the defense and aerospace industry, including 4 years in the U.S. Marine Corps specializing in avionics and airborne communications.

Ozzie’s industry standards activities include North American IPv6 Task Force Mobility and Wireless Subject Matter Expert and Steering Committee Member, Silicon Capitol (Wireless Sacramento) Advisor and Wireless Subject Matter Expert, California IPv6 Task Force Steering Committee Member, Worldwide Web Consortium (W3C) Steering Council Member.

Ozzie’s most recent published report was a paper on the “Utility of Broadband Wireless: A Technology Roadmap for Disaster Response” for homeland defense in cooperation with the Worldwide Consortium for the Grid (W2COG) and an industry-wide team of subject matter experts. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from Northeastern Illinois University.

Len Lauer

In his role, Mr. Lauer is a member of the executive committee and provides oversight and direction to Qualcomm Wireless Business Solutions, Qualcomm MEMS technologies, Qualcomm government technologies and the company's mobile TV subsidiary, MediaFLO USA. Len is currently on the board of directors for H&R Block and the Nelson Atkins Museum. prior to Qualcomm, Len served as chief operating officer for Sprint Nextel where he directed all of the company's operations to deliver converged media and communication services. While at Sprint, Len held several executive leadership positions including president and COO of Sprint Corporation, president of Sprint PCS, president of Sprint's consumer services group, president of Sprint Business, and president of the global markets group. Prior to joining Sprint, he was president and CEO of Bell Atlantic - New Jersey. Previously, Mr. Lauer held a variety of management positions in marketing and sales at IBM.

Rasoul Safavian
VP & CTO, Americas

Rasoul brings more than 20 years of experience in the wired and wireless communications industry. He is charged with establishing and maintaining the overall technical vision for Bechtel’s American markets and providing guidance and direction to its specific technological activities. In fulfilling this responsibility, he is well served by his background in cellular/PCS, fixed microwave, satellite communications, wireless local loops, and fixed networks; his working experience with major 2G, 2.5G, 3G, and 4G technologies; his exposure to the leading facets of technology development as well as its financial, business, and risk factors; and his extensive academic, teaching, and research experience.

Before joining Bechtel, Dr. Safavian oversaw advanced technology research and development activities, first as vice president of the Advanced Technology Group at Wireless Facilities, Inc., then as chief technical officer and vice president of engineering at GCB Services. Earlier, over an 8-year period at LCC International, Inc., he progressed through several positions. Initially, as principal engineer at LCC’s Wireless Institute, he was in charge of CDMA-related programs and activities. Next, as lead systems engineer/senior principal engineer, he provided nationwide technical guidance for LCC’s XM satellite radio project. Then, as senior technical manager/senior consultant, he assisted key clients with the design, deployment, optimization, and operation of 3G wireless networks.

Dr. Safavian is quite familiar with the Electrical Engineering departments of four universities: The George Washington University, where he has been an adjunct professor for several years; The Pennsylvania State University, where he is an affiliated faculty member; Purdue University, where he received his PhD in Electrical Engineering, was a graduate research assistant, and was later a member of the visiting faculty; and the University of Kansas, where he received both his BS and MS degrees in Electrical Engineering and was a teaching and a research assistant. He is a senior member of the IEEE and a past official reviewer of various transactions and journals.

Akira Arutaki

Akira ARUTAKI received his B.E. degree in electrical engineering and M.E. in electronics and communications engineering from Tohoku University in 1978 and 1980, respectively. Joining NEC Corporation in 1980, he was engaged in research and development of PCM, ISDN and ATM systems. From 1987 to 1990, he stayed at Washington University in St. Louis, MO, as a scholarship recipient, and was transferred to NEC America, Inc. in 1990. After coming back to Japan in 1994, he managed research and development of IP based communication systems such as routers, Mobile/Ethernet switches and VoIP/QoS servers. From 2003 to 2006, he was the General Manager of System Platforms Research Laboratories covering R&D activities in computer and communication platform arenas. He is currently the Associate Senior Vice President of NEC Communication Systems, Ltd. and the Visiting Professor of Kyushu Institute of Technology. He received the Network Systems Research Award of the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers (IEICE) in 1999. He is a co-author of “Multimedia ATM-LAN (in Japanese)” published from Triceps in 1994 and “Wide Area Ethernet Technology Overview (in Japanese)" published from the IEICE in 2005. He is a member of the IEICE of Japan.

Atish Gude
Senior Vice President of Mobile Broadband

Atish Gude serves as the senior vice president of Mobile Broadband Operations in Sprint Nextel’s new 4G Mobile Broadband business unit. Sprint recently selected mobile WiMAX as the technology platform for building its next generation mobile broadband business. Atish was appointed the head of operations to build and run operations. In this role, he is responsible for building the network and operations including sales, marketing, product/ service delivery, network and customer management.

Prior to this role, Atish was the senior vice president of Corporate Strategy for Sprint Nextel. Atish’s team has driven the company’s three year strategic plan including the company’s SmartGrowth coverage strategy for managing growth and profitability, managing Sprint’s Balanced Scorecard and performance metrics and developing Sprint’s broadband strategy including program managing two market trials.

Atish joined Nextel in 2000 as the vice president of Strategic Planning. Prior to joining Nextel, Atish was a senior manager with Deloitte Consulting. Atish was responsible for sales, management and delivery of business transformation services (including strategy, process improvement and IT) to clients in a number of industries including telecommunications, retail, manufacturing, health care and financial services.

Atish has an MBA from the University of Chicago and a BS degree in computer engineering from Syracuse University. He has also served as a member of the Board of Directors of Virgin Mobile, USA and currently serves as a Board member of the United eWay, a subsidiary of the United Way of America.

Michael Goguen

Willie W. Lu

Prof. Willie W. Lu is executive director of U.S. Center for Wireless Communications (USCWC) in Palo Alto, California, and a special advisor on emerging technologies and strategies in several China information and communications authorities as well as a technology expert committee member and examiner for European Commission’s FP6 and FP7 programs. Prof. Lu was member of Technological Advisory Council of U.S. Federal Communications Commission (US FCC-TAC), and a senior principal architect and vice president of Siemens and Infineon Technologies. He is also an internationally very well recognized and accredited senior expert in emerging wireless technologies and has been a senior technical advisor for 22 wireless communication authorities in more than 10 countries. He is an independent technical examiner for lots of high-tech venture capitals in the United States, Europe, Asia, and other places, and is listed in major Who's Whos in the world. He has guest edited around 50 special issues on emerging wireless communications in IEEE, IEICE, ACM and other major publications, and has had over 180 papers published in major professional publications as well as about 80 papers in SCI index. Prof. Lu is member of the editorial board of IEEE Spectrum, the flag of IEEE. He has been technical program chairman of numerous IEEE conferences including GLOBECOM’03, WCNC’02, VTC’03, and WWC’00-06, and wireless feature editor of IEEE Communications Magazine, IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications (former J-SAC Wireless), and others. He is a frequent keynote and featured speaker at lots of global technical fora, and a prominent wireless pioneer on the worldwide basis. He is a member of IEEE, ACM, IEICE, CIC and Sigma Xi, and an adjunct professor at many world-class universities in the world. Willie is also the founding chairman of the prestigious World Wireless Congress, Global Mobile Congress and Fourth Generation Mobile Forum (4GMF), and has been a distinguished and notable Chinese wireless expert overseas by various Chinese authorities since 1996.

Dennis Cheek

Dennis Cheek joined the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation in 2005 as Vice President of Education. He supervises the foundation’s national work in youth entrepreneurship, the future of learning, and improving mathematics, engineering, technology and science education in K-12 schools as well as community initiatives in the Kansas City Metro area. Dennis has a diverse background including serving as a classroom teacher of science, social studies, and religious instruction in Germany, the United Kingdom, and the USA at middle and high school levels, high school science department chair, district curriculum developer, superintendent of ten area career and technical schools, senior administrator for 13 years in the state education departments of NY and RI, Vice President for Venture Philanthropy at the John Templeton Foundation and a senior consultant to Science Applications International Corporation. He has served as an adjunct faculty member at eight colleges and universities, most recently in the M.S. program in science education at Penn State-Great Valley and the M.Th. program at Continental Theological Seminary in Belgium. Cheek edits the Journal of Technology Studies and serves on the editorial boards of the International Journal for Technology and Design Education, Journal of Science Education and Technology, The Science Teacher, and Odyssey, a science magazine for young adolescents. He has authored, edited, or contributed to over 700 publications and multimedia products. He was a member of the 2004 and 2006 Board of Examiners for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and a founding member of the Steering Group of the international Campbell Collaboration. Cheek has served on numerous panels and advisory boards including those of the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, American Association for the Advancement of Science, National Science Foundation, and the U.S. Department of Education. He holds a B.A. in history/secondary education from Towson University, B.S. in biology from Excelsior College, M.A. in history from University of Maryland Baltimore County, Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction/science education from Pennsylvania State University, and Ph.D. in theology from Durham University. He has undertaken additional postgraduate study in archaeology, educational administration, information sciences and policy, law, national security studies, and scientific visualization.

Stephane Maes

Stéphane H. Maes is Chief Architect and CTO at Oracle, Mobile, Voice and Communications, in charge of:
• Product architecture for SDP (Service Delivery platforms\) and end to end OSS/BSS/SDP integration
• Technical strategy for SDP and end to end OSS/BSS/SDP vision
targeting Telecommunications service provider and as well as enterprise markets.

At Oracle since 2002, Dr. Maes has also been driving Oracle-wide standard activities related to mobility, voice and communications.

In the past, Dr Maes has been responsible for architecture, technical strategy and evangelization successively for:
• Oracle AS wireless, including AS (Application Server) and EBS (E-Business Suite) mobile development tools, OCS mobile and voice components, Oracle Light and Telco middleware
• Oracle Collaboration Suite (OCS), Real Time Collaboration and Communications (OCS)
• OCS 11g

Dr Maes is widely credited for the evangelization of the use of IT technology concepts in Telcos with work significant impact on industry wide standardization of the service layer (OSE, Parlay, 3GPP/2, …), Policy enforcement (e.g. OSE PE, PEEM, …), SOA for Telcos, OSS/BSS/SDP integration, Parlay/ISM/OSE integration, open standard based mobile email etc. His work led to the widely adopted OSE (Open Mobile Alliance Service Environment) now endorsed by OMA, Parlay, 3GPP, 3GPP2, ETSI, TSPAN, ITU, TMF and more.

Before Oracle, Dr Maes was at IBM, T.J Watson Research Center where he was driving:
• Large Vocabulary Speech recognition in challenging acoustic environment (Broadcast telephony, in car)
• Speaker recognition and biometrics
• Embedded and telephony speech engines, architecture and middleware
• Multi-channel, multimodal, multi-device and conversational middleware, tools, standard and evangelization.
• IBM Pervasive Computing platform for service provider

Some highlights at IBM include invention and design of conversational biometrics, speechML (IBM contribution to VoiceXML), XForms and DI authoring and fundamental of multimodal and multi-device authoring. Also at IBM, on assignment to Pervasive Computing division, he joined the architecture and standard team and focus on the definition of an overall strategy for the mobile space and key related architecture initiative like SPDE (Service Provider Delivery Environment), WSXL (precursor to WSRP and JSR 168), SIP and MRCP (including a proposal to control speech ad telephony engines as web services).

Throughout its career at Oracle and IBM, Dr Maes has published many papers and received numerous patents and industry recognitions.

After graduating and before joining IBM, he pursued this line of Research as Member of Technical Staff at AT&T Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, NJ where he developed new techniques for robust speech processing in noisy environment.

Dr. Maes holds Bachelor, Master and PhD degrees simultaneously in Electrical Engineering and Physics from the UCL, Louvain, Belgium. He completed his PhD jointly at CAIP (Center For Computer Aids To Industrial Productivity), Rutgers University, NJ. He also successfully graduated from the International Space University. His academic work was sponsored by several grants from the European Union (Erasmus), the European Space Agency (ESA), DARPA and the prestigious National Funds for Scientific Research (FNRS). While at IBM, he also successfully completed IBM MBA program.

David Wood
Executive Vice President
Symbian

David Wood joined Psion as a software engineer in June 1988, and gradually moved into roles involving software architecture and system integration. He was an early adopter of object-oriented technology within Psion in the late 1980s and saw this come to fruition in popular handheld devices such as the Series 3 and Series 3a. From 1994 to 1997 he oversaw the development of the upper layers of the software system that eventually became known as Symbian OS. He was a founding director of Symbian on its formation in 1998. From 1998 to 2002 he headed Symbian's Technical Consulting department, building and directing teams that worked with Symbian's customers to create the world's first smartphones. From 2002 to 2004 he was EVP of Partnering at Symbian, creating partner programs to foster sustained commercial success for companies in the Symbian ecosystem. As EVP of Research, David is now responsible for understanding and guiding Symbian's response to disruptive trends in technology, business, and society. David has an MA in Mathematics from Cambridge University and an honorary doctorate in science from the University of Westminster.

Hiroyo Ogawa
Executive Director
NICT, Japan

Dr. Hiroyo Ogawa joined the Yokosuka Electrical Communication Laboratories, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation (NTT), Yokosuka, in 1976. He has been engaged in the research and development on microwave and millimeter-wave integrated circuits, monolithic integrated circuits, microwave photonics, millimeter-wave access systems, and satellite communication systems. In 1998 he joined the Communication Research Laboratory, Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (MPT), and he has been researching, developing and standardizing millimeter-wave wireless access systems. He is now an executive director of New Generation Wireless Communications Research Center, National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), Japan.

He is a fellow of the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers (IEICE) of Japan and a fellow of IEEE.

Scott Sobers
Sr. Director of Global Solutions
IBM

Scott Sobers is the Global Program Director for Service Provider solutions within the Tivoli business unit, International Business Machines Corporation. He is responsible for managing Tivoli’s solution and marketing strategy for the Communication Service Provider industry on a worldwide basis.

Sobers joined IBM in February 2006 via the acquisition of Micromuse Inc. With a strong interest in both market strategy and market management, he has been actively involved in one of Tivoli’s most recent acquisitions, Vallent, and is currently leading a cross-brand marketing program within IBM.

He has more than 15 years marketing experience including both business and consumer marketing from companies such as AOL Time Warner, PeopleSoft, and Software AG. He has extensive experience and a proven track record in strategy planning, marketing plan development, channel development, acquisitions and building teams that resulted in successful alliances and marketing initiatives, product and service development, introduction to market and achieving significant profit and revenue targets.

Sobers has been a featured speaker at numerous conferences worldwide such as 3G World Congress, CTIA, VoIP World, Internet Telephony and many others. He has also contributed to many publications, including InfoWorld, WirelessWeek, Pipeline, Telephony Online, and Von Magazine. He is also actively engaged with the TeleManagement forum and has been a voting representative.

Sobers earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Maryland and an MBA from Georgetown University. He currently resides in Washington, D.C.

Gary Kovacs
Vice President of Mobile & Devices
Adobe

Gary Kovacs is vice president of product management for mobile and devices at Adobe. In this role he is responsible for Adobe’s mobile marketing strategy, communications and market intelligence.

Kovacs is a veteran of the mobile industry. Prior to joining Adobe in 2004, he led the successful creation of Zi Corporation, a NASDAQ-listed technology company specializing in embedded software and services for mobile and consumer devices. As president of Zi Corporation, Kovacs envisioned a technology to bridge the usability gap between humans and computing devices. He developed the company from initial traction to a repeatable product business with more than 100 major customers shipping over 50 million mobile devices annually.

Kovacs also spent 10 years at IBM in positions of increasing seniority including product management and marketing, corporate marketing, sales leadership, and general management within the global software division based in New York.

Kovacs holds a bachelor of commerce and an MBA, with distinction, from the University of Calgary.

Sanjiv R. Parikh
Head of Emerging Business
Microsoft

Sanjiv Parikh is a senior Director for the Emerging Business Team at Microsoft, based in Silicon Valley. The Emerging Business Team manages Microsoft’s interaction with venture capitalists and start-ups world wide to accelerate innovation and foster the software ecosystem. Within the Emerging Business Team, Sanjiv is in charge of engagements with mobility oriented start-ups, venture capitalists and enterprises.

Prior to joining Microsoft, Sanjiv was Managing Director of FairWinds Ventures, a private equity advisory and investment firm. He advised large corporations and assisted early/mid-stage companies with their private equity needs: which included M&A, spin-outs, financings, and interim management.

Previously, Sanjiv was a Managing Director of Atrium Capital. Atrium Capital is a 16 year-old Sand Hill Road venture capital firm which, in addition to having its own financial fund, managed the venture capital activities of Fortune Brands, Hallmark Cards, R.R. Donnelley & Sons and W.W. Grainger. Atrium’s investments include AdForce, B2BWorks, DigitalPersona, FieldCentrix, InfoUSA.com, MapQuest, MetaTV, Multex and RedEnvelope.

Prior to joining Atrium Capital, Sanjiv helped launch RightWorks Corporation; an enterprise software company in supply chain management and procurement that was sold to Internet Capital Group for $1.25 billion and is currently part of i2 Technologies.

Previously, Sanjiv was a Principal with Mehta & Company, Inc.; a merchant bank specializing in private equity finance and turnaround management. Sanjiv invested in and helped turnaround several portfolio companies in various operating capacities, including: a $50 million nationwide healthcare services firm and a $100 million European seat belt manufacturer, among others.

Outside of work, Sanjiv has been actively involved with The Indus Entrepreneur (TiE) in Silicon Valley since 1994. He organized the venture capital seminar for the 1994, 1995 and 1996 annual conferences. He is currently a Charter Member and on the board and faculty of the TiE-Institute which aims to further education for entrepreneurs. Sanjiv also serves on the Board of Directors of the Wharton Club of San Francisco, a community and professional development organization of The Wharton School.

On a personal note, Sanjiv is an avid sailor, having been sailing for over 25 years both competitively and for leisure. Sanjiv has sailed off the coasts of California, Maine, Maryland, Florida, and in the Mediterranean off the coasts of France, Italy and Greece.

Sanjiv holds an engineering degree from the University of California at Berkeley and an MBA from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

Mohammad Shakouri
Vice President

Dr. Mohammad S. Shakouri, VP of Business Development of Alvarion, has 20 years of experience in wireless system, microwave and fiber optic networks. Previously 3 years at Lucent, Shakouri was responsible for managing, building and developing network solutions for European and South American broadband wireless markets. Shakouri also spent 14 years in technical and management positions with Hewlett Packard developing microwave and fiber optic communication components and systems. He co-founded the wireless systems division, where he was responsible for engineering team developing low cost residential digital wireless systems for US and Asian markets. Shakouri earned his doctorate in electrical engineering from Stanford University on Subpicosecond GaAS Wafer Probe Systems. He was WCAi and WiMAX Board member and IEEE MTT-SVC Chair.
